Equipment:
Wire-make sure you get the right stuff. Ask in the shop. You will need about 10 metres if the speakers don't come with wire, or 5 metres for the rear speakers if it does.
Solder Iron
4inch speakers, 3-way are best
New head unit
Electrical tape
Other standard tools
REMEMBER TO DISCONNECT BATTERY!
First remove all the door cards, the knee bolsters and the center console. Put the screws back into the holes so you don't lose them. Then remove the original stereo plus the bracket that goes around it. This bracket is held in place by four spring clips on the topside and underside. Once depressed, slide the bracket out the front of the center panel.
After removing the door cards, you have to get the whole handle section/armrest off as the speaker comes out the front. To do this, remove the five screws.
Now the arm rest can be pulled off. The armrest won't just fall of as its quite sticky. You have to pull it off.
Now disconnect the speaker cable and undo the four black nuts that hold the speaker in place. You will need a 9mm socket. The bolt is quite long so first put the socket on, then put the driver on or use a screwdriver to turn it. Now you can push the speaker threw. You may need to give the bolts a few taps. You can also cut and remove the speaker plug to save a bit of room.
Place the new speaker in the original hole. It probably won't fit so use a stanley knife to cut off parts of the foam and vinyl until the speaker sits nicely. Follow the instructions which come with the speakers to make sure you attach them properly to the doorcard.
The original speaker wiring has a common earth so you will not be able to use it. Instead, you will have to fit new wiring. There are a few ways in which you can run the wiring through the cars, however this is how I did it. First thread the new wires through the rubber boot by the hinge of the door. Then put the door cards on leaving a bit of slack so you can take the door cards off in the future. I did that on the front, however, on the back doors I couldn't get the interior trim off. So instead I threaded the wire through the rubber seal by cutting a small hole on the underside and pushing it towards the back of the car. Then pop the wire out and had it go underneath the cream metal trim that goes around the door frame and underneath the rear seats and then underneath the carpet to the front of the car.
Once you have the 8 wires(2 for each speaker) at the center console, you have to connect to the new head unit. With the new head unit, you should have a cable which connects the power and speakers to the unit. First cut the plug of the speaker end of the cable. Then solder the correct speaker wire with the wire on the cable. A wiring diagram should come with the head unit. Then solder the power supply wires on the cable with the ones from the car. Here are the wire colours which apply to 88/89/90 models.
Light Green/orange is the main power when the ignition/ACC is switched on.
Brown/white- provides power all the time so the stereo keeps its memory.
Black- is earth/ground
Remember to wrap the soldered parts of the wire with electrical tape or use heat shrink sleeving.
Once completed, connect the battery and test your new sound system.
