So your bonnet on your XJS keeps failing on your head?
The cure is not necessarily new gas struts though. Have you
tried putting a slight kink in the gas push rod?
Here’s how.
Open the bonnet fully and grab the gas strut at around the
mid way point and gently pull it upwards. this puts a slight
curve in the strut which will hold the bonnet up more securely
as the push rod now has to ride over a hump to fit into the
strut body.
It should be noted that there really is no substitute for
new struts. But the jaguar ones are very costly. Luckily BMW
use the same item on some of there bonnets and boots so a
trip to the local scrappy should get a set for next to nothing.
The BMW bonnets are a lot shorter than those of the jaguar
which is good news for us as it means they have done a lot
less work when lifting. A point worth noting is the Beema
bonnet flies open under gas power so they are more than good
enough.
